What is opioid rehab in Switzerland?
Opioid rehab in Switzerland is medically led treatment for dependence on heroin, prescription painkillers or synthetic opioids. It starts with a supervised taper or substitution protocol and continues with intensive therapy.
Switzerland first tested heroin-assisted treatment in 1994 (FOPH, 2021). Swiss narcotics law requires a cantonal licence to prescribe narcotics for dependence and a federal licence for heroin-assisted treatment (Fedlex: Narcotics Act). Private clinics combine this medical framework with complete privacy.
Opioid addiction explained. Opioid use disorder is dependence on drugs such as heroin, morphine, oxycodone, codeine or fentanyl. Tolerance and physical dependence develop quickly. Withdrawal causes severe pain, sweating, vomiting, anxiety and cravings. Our guide to opioid addiction signs, diagnosis and recovery explains withdrawal, opioid agonist therapy and naloxone.
Key figures
- 14,995 people in Switzerland received opioid agonist therapy in 2024, and 70% had been in treatment for at least 10 years (Addiction Switzerland, 2024).
- 1,832 people in Switzerland were in heroin-assisted treatment in 2024 (Obsan, 2024).
- 188 people in Switzerland died directly from drugs in 2024, most of them from heroin use (Obsan, 2024).
