The first 72 hours at a Swiss rehab clinic: what happens

In the first 72 hours at a Swiss rehab clinic you are admitted, assessed by doctors and therapists, started on supervised detox if you need it, settled into a daily routine and given a first individual treatment plan. The clinical team runs these steps in a fixed order. Each step supplies the information the next one needs.

What happens in the first 72 hours

The first three days cover five connected stages:

  • Admission and intake: history, consent and practical details
  • Medical and psychological assessment: physical health, mental health and substance use
  • Medically supervised detox: monitoring and easing withdrawal
  • Stabilisation and orientation: settling into the clinic and its daily rhythm
  • The first individual treatment plan, drafted from the assessment findings

The stages run close together. The medical team can then adjust care quickly as your condition becomes clearer.

Arrival and admission

Admission opens the first day. The admissions team confirms the booking and completes the consent paperwork. It records identification, emergency contacts, current medication and a first account of the substance use or behaviour that led to admission.

Swiss private clinics tend to keep arrival calm and private. One coordinator often guides one patient through admission. The team explains the clinic rules, the daily schedule and the limits on phone and internet use.

“substance use disorders should be treated like any other chronic illness.”

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Drugs, Brains, and Behavior: Treatment and Recovery, 2020

Medical and psychological assessment

A physician examines you, reviews your medical history and orders blood tests and other checks. A psychiatrist or psychologist assesses mental health, trauma history, sleep and co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression.

This double assessment matters because many patients have more than one condition. In a 2024 survey of Swiss addiction services, about 6 in 10 institutions reported that more than 60% of their clients had a co-occurring mental disorder (Addiction Switzerland, 2024). Treatment can then target the real problem, not only the surface symptom. Swiss private clinics usually assign a small, consistent team to each patient.

Supervised detox

For people dependent on alcohol or drugs, supervised detox often starts within the first 72 hours. Nursing staff monitor vital signs and track withdrawal symptoms. About half of people with alcohol use disorder who abruptly stop or cut down develop withdrawal symptoms (AFP, 2021). These begin 6 to 24 hours after the last drink (AFP, 2021).

Severity depends on the substance, the amount and the length of use. The medical team adjusts medication to each person. A doctor is available around the clock. Our guide on what happens during medical detox covers the full timeline. Detox, rehab or psychiatric clinic explains how doctors decide which level of care comes first.

Stabilisation and the first daily routine

Stabilisation shapes the later part of the first 72 hours. The team helps you regulate sleep, nutrition and basic routine. A stable body and mind respond better to therapy. Staff introduce you to the clinic layout, the meal schedule and the people who will support your stay.

Regular meals, rest and a predictable schedule help restore a sense of control. Light activity such as short walks is added once the medical team judges you ready.

The first individual treatment plan

By the end of the third day, the team turns the assessment findings into an individual treatment plan. The plan names the main conditions, sets early goals and selects therapies. These may include individual psychotherapy, group work, family involvement or specific medical treatment.

The plan is a starting point, not a fixed script. The team revises it as you progress. Most people with addiction need at least 3 months in treatment to significantly reduce or stop use (NIDA, 2018). The first plan therefore also looks ahead to aftercare.

Privacy from the first hour

Privacy applies from the moment you arrive. Under the Swiss Criminal Code, doctors, psychologists, nurses and their auxiliaries who disclose a patient's secret can, on complaint, face up to three years' custody or a monetary penalty (Fedlex: Swiss Criminal Code Art. 321). Clinics limit contact between patients and protect records carefully. Our guide to confidentiality in Swiss rehab explains the legal framework.

This discretion is one reason many international patients choose Switzerland. People with a public role or a demanding career can start treatment knowing that their identity and clinical details are protected.

What the first three days set in motion

The first 72 hours turn a difficult decision into a structured, medically safe start. Admission records the practical details. Assessment maps the real problem. Supervised detox protects the body. Stabilisation restores routine. The first treatment plan sets the direction.

Knowing what these three days involve makes the start of treatment less daunting. The rest of the programme builds on this foundation.
